Some Interesting Facts About Beer-
(Those little-known things that Mom didn't want you to learn)

Throughout the world, there are over 20,000 brands of beer.

Beer has been found to have been brewed as far back as 4300 BC, according to writings on clay tablets from ancient Babylonia. It was also brewed long ago by the Chinese, and even the Incas, among other past civilizations.

Although many other base ingredients were tried, barley has been the favored main ingredient for thousands of  years.

Compared to other alcoholic beverages, beer has a great many less calories ounce for ounce- as do whole milk, and even unsweetened fruit juices!  (What better excuse do we need!)

Studies have shown that calories derived from alcohol vs. soft drinks such as soda, etc. actually leads to a loss of weight rather than gain- apparently alcohol doesn't contribute to the body's glycogen stores, therefore more body fat is converted to energy.

What's it all mean? That "beer gut" is not actually a beer gut at all- but the result from eating too much fatty food!

Unfortunately for the already obese, drinking beer may contribute to further weight gain- not due to its evil nature, but the simple fact that we are consuming calories when we eat or drink most anything other than plain water.  (Still, I like mine flavored!)

According to results from studying 17,000 people, those who drink beer moderately were a whopping 25% LESS likely to be out of work due to illness than statistics would predict.  (Wow, imagine how many more it would have been if so many of us didn't feel the need to sit in a boat and drink beer all summer!)

Think that 2% milk, or that apple juice is good? Sure- but a  typical American 12 oz beer has fewer calories! (Now we just gotta get people convinced it belongs in our cereal bowl!)

Forget what you hear in those commercials- "Want a  beer, or an ale!?"- and crap like that.  Beer comes in two basic groups: Ales and Lagers.  Ales are fermented with top- fermenting yeast that prefers warm temperatures, while lagers are fermented at colder temperatures, and for much longer periods. These two basic groups are divided into 27 styles, and a lovable 49 sub styles!   (Remember- anyone that says they don't like beer just hasn't looked around very much!)

America's oldest operating brewery is located in Pottsville, PA.  The D.G Yuengling (pronounced "ying-ling") brewery has been owned and operated  by the Yuengling family since 1829!

The word "honeymoon" was derived from the term "honey month".
4000 years ago, Babylonian men were blessed with a custom in which their new father-in-law would supply them with as much honey mead as they could consume for the month following the ceremony. Their calendar was based on the phases of the moon, hence the term honey month, later known as the honeymoon.

Belgium is one of the world's foremost producers of the finest beers. Although the whole country is about the size of Ohio, it supports over 100 breweries which produce over 500 types of beer!

Of all the alcoholic beverages, beer is the least intoxicating

Drank in moderation, beer has been proven to actually prevent heart attacks

Due to its contents including carbon dioxide and certain organic acids, cold beer actually makes you livelier when consumed in moderation.

More beer is sold on draught (from the tap) than any other way.

In Britain, four out every five pints of beer are consumed in pubs; There are over 60,000 pubs in the UK!

Beer has always been quite a popular item- even to the tax man. The first taxes on beer were collected back in 1188, by Henry II.  His excuse for the tariff: To help fund the Crusades!

Hops were not a part of beer until the 1400's, when it was realized that their natural preserving qualities helped prevent beer from spoiling.  Before they became commonly accepted, many spices and herbs were used, including rosemary, bittersweet, and thyme.

The USA brews more beer per year than any other country.

College students account for quite a little beer consumption annually- an estimated 4 billion cans!

Before six-pack holders were invented, the purchaser would bring home the beer in a paper bag decorated with the brewer's name.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
